The most important truth: Jesus is the propitiation (or payment) for our sins (1John 2:2, Romans 3:25). This fact alone excludes all forms of self-righteousness and works for salvation. We must rest in Jesus' finished work alone for salvation, in order for it to be free.
It is vital to present this fact when giving out the gospel. People need to understand they are saved by Christ's payment for their sins, and not by their own efforts (which are insufficient, us being imperfect people). Only Jesus' blood can atone and wash away our sins. Thus we must trust the blood of Jesus alone without adding any works to the gospel!
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it (New Jerusalem or heaven) any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
And from Jesus Christ, who ... washed us from our sins in his own blood (by faith in the gospel), - Revelation 21:27, 1:5
Revelation 21:27 makes it clear that imperfect people cannot enter heaven. Revelation 1:5 in contrast says that only those who are washed in the blood of Christ (the believers of the gospel) can enter heaven (new Jerusalem). Thus only those who have put their faith and trust a 100% in Jesus' death, burial and resurrection have forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Being washed from our sins through faith in Jesus' blood as payment (or atonement) for our sins makes us righteous and perfect before God, spiritually. Thus salvation is a free gift, paid for by Jesus' blood, and this gift is applied and given ''to them that believe on His name'' for salvation (Romans 1:16, 1 John 5:13).
